ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
Fifty-four students from Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada are hammering away on wooden boards in a warehouse on Front Street in Albany.
But they're not building a house that will sit there. The Habitat for Humanity home will be assembled on Rosebrier Avenue between Sylvester Road and Mock Road.
The students are building the walls in a modular fashion because the ground at the actual home site is too wet.
They're constructing the walls across from Albany's historic Bridge House, and they'll be trucked to East Albany for assembly.
The students say it's much more rewarding to spend their vacation in service. "I think says something about the caliber of students we have on our trip, and our school, " said Heather Haight. "Just to come and give up their time for a week to build a house for somebody else, instead of living the life on the beach, I guess."
The students are first of several groups of college students participating in the "Habitat Collegiate Challenge," over the next six weeks.
Other students from Illinois, Kansas, and Virginia will also do their part to help Habitat in the Albany area.
This home the students are building today will go to a wheel-chair bound resident.
