ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Did you see those amazing shots of a meteor streaking across the sky and exploding in Russia?

An expert at Albany's Weatherbee Planetarium say it was probably about the size of an SUV.

It's rare for a meteor that large to make it through the atmosphere and that close to land.

Allison Young says the meteor was probably just rock and we probably won't see another event like this for a while.

"Earth passes through tons of debris every single day, so it's not uncommon for this to happen just something of that size to come through the atmosphere and to actually strike a populated area, that is extremely rare," said Young.

The huge explosion from the meteor blasted out windows and shook buildings in central Russia, injuring more than a thousand people.
