The Valdosta community celebrated Arbor Day today by honoring Valdosta State University as a Tree Campus USA university.

VSU is the ninth university in Georgia to receive the designation for its sustainable tree environment.

To become a Tree Campus, VSU had to create a tree committee, a tree care plan, a service learning project, and the school has to observe Arbor Day each year.

"These trees and these grounds which we can be so proud of, we will always be good stewards of that heritage because this is an investment that we not only make now but for future generations," said Dr. Bill McKinney, VSU President.

The City of Valdosta was also designated a Tree City USA community for the 27th year.
