Pamela Green Jackson of Albany received her Citizens Medal from President Barack Obama in ceremonies at the White house late this morning.
Jackson is the CEO/Founder of the Youth Becoming Healthy (YBH) Project, based in Albany.
The YBH Project works to eradicate childhood obesity through nutrition education and fun physical activity programs for middle and elementary school students.
Congressman Sanford D. Bishop Jr. (GA-02) joined President Barack Obama and Pamela Jackson at the Whitehouse event. Bishop assisted in getting some the funding for the project.
Jackson started the foundation in the memory of her brother, who died as a result of diabetes and other illnesses.
In 2004, Pamela Green-Jackson started Youth Becoming Healthy. It spread to all Dougherty County middle schools and caught the eye of the Montel Williams Show.
Jackson was featured on the "Fight Against Fat" episode where she spread her message across to the nation.
"What I'm hoping is that people will understand that this is an emergency. It is the number 2 cause of preventable death and if I can prevent another person from suffering like my brother did, then it will all be worth it," said Jackson.
