MOULTRIE, GA (WALB) -

National Beef Company is one of the largest beef processors in the Country, but for nearly 450 employees in Colquitt County, it's where they work to make a living and support their families. But soon, 283 of those workers will be laid off.

Last fall, National Beef lost a huge contract. They've been looking for replacements. Chamber of Commerce officials hope this is just a dip before the company comes back bigger than before.

This week, the company announced plans to cut 433 jobs at the Moultrie Plant and the one in Hummel Wharf Pennsylvania. It's because they lost a contract with a major customer-- Walmart.

Darrell Moore, the President of the Economic Development Authority says he first learned about possible troubles last fall. "They lost one of their larger employees and they were hoping to find another company. They waited as long as they could to give employees notice of pending layoffs I think they said 283 Monday, that's the worst case scenario."

The company says they don't plan to close down. He says they've got sales teams out in full force looking for replacement companies. "They've got some strong prospects to replace the business. I'm sure they will have a dip and then in a year of two they will be back and larger than before."

But for those who may get laid off or don't have a job there is help. At the Moultrie Career Center, they offer numerous free resources for job searchers. Chamber officials remain hopeful they'll find additional customers and help boost business in the future.

"We have about 60 jobs in our system." From computers, to books, even weekly workshops. Job Searchers have everything right at their fingertips.

"We do know that when people come in looking for work we assist them in every way possible finding a job." The layoffs become effective April 13th.
