A Lowndes County man is behind bars after deputies uncovered nearly half a million dollars of marijuana.
Folks gathered at the Marine Corps Logistics Base to celebrate black history Tuesday.
Shirley Sherrod challenged the crowd to get working to end racism in Southwest Georgia. This was one of the first times Sherrod spoke locally about her ordeal in 2010.
The USDA asked Sherrod to resign after a conservative website posted portions of a speech she gave, edited to make her appear racist.
"After almost three years I guess it's just time. I've spoken all around the country and I haven't talked much to the people unless it was one on one and I just thought it was time to get started," said Sherrod. "It was a terrible thing to have to deal with, but I always look for the good in everything. And I just saw it as God putting me at a point and in a place where I could begin to speak some of the things I think all the time."
Sherrod's message to the community is that this area will not get better unless we decide to make it better and work to make that happen.
"I think it's very important for us to start saying- let's make it different, let's work to make a difference. And not let all of the negative attitudes be the only one we hear," said Sherrod.
Tuesday's event was the annual black history luncheon put on by the Albany Area Chapter of Blacks in Government.
