DOUGHERTY CO., GA (WALB) -

Officials say two people were taken to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital Monday night after their car crashed into a fallen tree on Leary Road.

Dougherty County Police and the Calhoun County Volunteer Fire Department responded to the wreck just before midnight. Officials say the vehicle was heading eastbound on Leary Road when it crashed into a massive tree that had fallen across the roadway. Police say they believe the tree was blocking the road for about 45 minutes before the wreck.

"There is a lot of rain and saturation in this area. This is common when we get a lot of rain fall. That's the reason we were checking the area earlier to try and prevent any of this but unfortunately we can't be everywhere all the time," says Lynn Davis with the DCP Patrol Division.

Officials aren't releasing the names of the passengers at this time but do say they sustained minor injuries and have since been released from the hospital.
