The Valdosta Fire Department is taking a new approach to raise money. The firemen are modeling in a pin-up calendar called "Valdosta's Hot Heroes."

The Valdosta Fire Department is heating up the new year. The firemen are using their looks to raise money for the department. The men are posing in their first ever pin-up calendar.

"We're used to coming to work and doing what we got to do, not coming to work and worrying about photo shoots and how our hair looks," said firefighter, Tyson Reed.

For these firefighters, they never imagined smiling for the camera would turn into such a big hit.

"I figured you know we'd be quite lucrative off of the sales and stuff, but not this big," said Reed.

In its first day of sales, the department made $1,500. Sergeant Carolyn McMillan created the calendars and said the biggest debate was deciding whether to go shirts on or shirts off.

"We decided to do this thing PG, we wanted to have class, we wanted to keep it tasteful," said McMillan.

Reed laughed, "Our wives played more of a part in that then we did."

All of the money raised through the calendars will go towards restoring a historic Hook and Ladder truck to its original condition.

The Valdosta Fire Department purchased the ladder truck in 1927, and today it's the oldest operating truck of its kind in Georgia.

"For the City of Valdosta to have it, I mean we take pride in that," said Reed.

"It's our history, and firefighters if nothing else are passionate about our history," said McMillan.

McMillan says she's having to reorder more calendars to keep up with the demand.

You can buy your own calendar for $10 by contacting VFD at (229) 333-1836. 

Citizens may also pick up calendars at VFD Station #1, located at 106 S. Oak Street, while supplies last.
