Child still hospitalized after dog attack

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

An Albany boy remains in an Atlanta hospital after part of his scalp was ripped off in a dog attack.  The owner of the dog wouldn't go on camera, but says the dog does not have any history of violence.

Officials are putting the pieces together about what led to a dog attack Sunday afternoon on Morningside Drive in Albany. The victim, 11-year-old Richard Musselwhite, lives two doors down.

There are conflicting reports about exactly what happened.  The owner of the pit bull, Cash would not go on camera, but says the one-year-old dog attacked Richard and his brother, 15 year-old Mark, after the two jumped over the fence into her yard to get a rake.

Now her dog is quarantined for at least ten days, or until she can provide information regarding shots. "Rabies control will do a full evaluation of the dog to determine anything about his behavior prior to releasing it back to the owner," said Phyllis Banks of the Albany Police Department.

Mark was bitten on his right arm, but Richard sustained more serious injures- a deep wound on his head.

"It appears at this point that the owner did everything possible to avoid something like this happening, by having the dog secured properly inside the yard," Banks said.

Albany Police remind parents to talk with their children about using caution around dogs they are unfamiliar with. The owner of the dog says she raised him with her own children and was still visibly shaken up when we spoke with her.

Family members say Richard Musselwhite recently had surgery and is at a children's hospital in Atlanta.
