More than 700,000 children in Georgia are at risk of going hungry tonight.
Many of them are here in our area, one of the poorest regions of the state.
Two south Georgia non-profit organizations teamed up to help.
People have many different reasons for volunteering.
Some need to fulfill service hour requirements, others are just looking for a way to make a positive difference.
With the help of volunteers, Hands on Thomas County and Second Harvest of South Georgia hope to end hunger.
"We think of hunger as this big national issue and you don't really put a face to it, but the truth of the matter is you look around your very own community and there are working class families that are struggling to put food on the table for their families and they're all around us," said HOTC Executive Director Angela Kiminas.
"Hunger is a very big issue right now in south Georgia and all over. Just the way the times are right now. We're trying to help as many people as we can. Second Harvest of South Georgia, we'll move about 16 million pounds of food a year," said Second Harvest Executive Director Danny Dukes.
The non profits are looking for volunteers to participate in manna drops to distribute food throughout the community.
"From our perspective as a volunteer organization, Hands On Thomas County is not only looking to address the needs in our community, but it's also looking to provide people in our community volunteer opportunities that are meaningful and give back in a direct way," said Kiminas.
"Volunteers are a big part of what we live off of our self. We use volunteer groups from churches, from community resources. Hands on Thomas County is great with that," said Dukes.
And organizers say the problem is only getting worse.
"Every time we have run out of food. It's awful to have to turn people away at the end of the line and we try not to do that, but it does happen," said Kiminas.
Each manna drop feeds about 600 people or 200 families in need.
