AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -

A stolen Lexus was spotted by an Americus Police officer Friday morning. When he tried to stop the Lexus, the driver sped off and the officer pursued.

The chase headed toward Montezuma, and the fleeing driver continued through Oglethorpe, Vienna, and on toward Cordele. Deputies from Sumter County, Macon Co., Dooly Co., Crisp Co., and GA State Patrol trooper all joined in the chase.

The Americus Police Dept. says the criminal in the Lexus lost control of the car and crashed near the Cordele Airport. The driver, who turned out to be a young boy, tried to run away, but deputies quickly had him handcuffed.

Neither he nor any of the officers were injured in the chase.

Officers found what appears to be stolen property inside the stolen car.

Americus Chief of Police Mark Gerbino issued this news release about noon Friday-

On Friday, February 8, 2013 at approximately 8:30 a.m., an Americus Police Officer spotted a 1998 Lexus 400 which was reported as stolen on February 5, 2013. The Americus Police Officer was driving a fully marked Americus Police Department patrol vehicle.  The police officer attempted to stop the Lexus in the area of Rucker Street, but the driver fled at a high rate of speed.

The driver led Americus Police Department patrol units on a vehicle pursuit out of the city limits and onto Highway 49 north towards Montezuma. The pursuit continued through the towns of Oglethorpe, Vienna, and towards Cordele.

Units of the Americus Police Department were assisted by units of the Sumter County Sheriff Office, Georgia State Patrol, Macon County, Dooly County, and Crisp County Sheriff Departments.

The driver of the vehicle lost control in the area of the Crisp County Airport.   The vehicle ran into an embankment and became disabled. The driver fled the vehicle and attempted to run from the officers. Officers were able to apprehend the driver and placed him under arrest.

The driver of the vehicle was a male juvenile. Minor damage was sustained to the Lexus. Property recovered in the vehicle is related to at least one local burglary.  There were no other occupants in the vehicle during the pursuit.
