LEE COUNTY, GA (WALB) -

Planting season for what is expected to be one of South Georgia's largest corn crops ever is about a month away, and growers are already getting prepared.

Lee County's Farm Service Agency office is servicing growers applications for drought disaster assistance from 2011.

The Supplemental Revenue Assistance Payments were approved to help growers who lost at least 10-percent of their crop due to the drought.

F-S-A officials say many farmers are using that relief money to pay for the coming crop.

"They are hoping to use some of that money," said Lee County FSA Office Executive Director Hank Hammond.  "We are undergoing a signup right now for the 2011 crops losses. That's called the SURE program."

A grower can collect up to $100,000 in disaster assistance.

F-S-A officials urge qualified growers to apply for the disaster assistance as soon as possible.
