ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
As part of this week's observation, Georgia's Emergency Management Agency and their Ready Georgia Campaign is urging people statewide to take some steps toward being better prepared which includes making sure you know what to do if a tornado strikes your area.
Officials say during the months of March, April, May, tornadoes can and will appear without warning and could make their destructive stamp anywhere in Georgia.
That's why it's important to be able to act quickly, know the safest place in your home or office where you can take shelter, always have a NOAA weather radio on hand, and make sure those around you know what emergency action plan you have in place.
They also say to familiarize yourself with important terms. A tornado watch means a tornado is possible in your area which is different from a tornado warning which means a tornado has been spotted near you and need to take shelter immediately.
Experts say all of these steps could be the difference between life and death.
The National Weather Service is asking everyone to participate in a state-wide tornado drill that will take place at 9:00 Wednesday morning. That means all schools, businesses, government offices and homes are asked to take that time to find a safe place and go through an emergency action plan so you'll be prepared for any natural disaster.
