Officials: Smoking ban in public housing is working
ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
Albany Housing Authority leaders say a new smoking ban in public housing is working.
Executive Director Dan McCarthy says only a couple of violators have been caught since the ban on smoking on housing authority property went into effect on the 1st of the year.
They were verbally reprimanded.
There is one exception.
The ban won't go into effect at Malone Towers until this summer because residents weren't ready for the changes.
There is now a support group there to help residents stop smoking.
"One of our residents there has organized a smoking cessation class and they're doing that every Monday evening. They're inviting anyone who wants to come and be a part of that to go through a procedure with them to help them quit smoking," said McCarthy.
Violators of the smoking ban could be evicted if they're caught repeatedly breaking the rules.
