Strategic plan aims to retain young people

Posted: Updated:
ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Albany city commissioners want to come up with a plan to boost the economy by encouraging young people not to move away.

City officials have been researching strategic plans designed to enhance the community.

Similar plans in other cities cost 250-thousand dollars.

The goal is to create a broad plan with plenty of citizen input that will help convince young people to stay in Albany.

The commission is also looking at other alternatives such as partnering with surrounding colleges and the economic development commission.

"I think a lot of it's got to do with quality of life and the kind of community we want to live in," said Wes Smith, assistant city manager. "Identifying that better, whether it be transportation, education, housing, the types of things that make our lives better. And then doing the things we have to do to make that happen."

Right now... commissioners are debating whether to move forward.

Some say it's too costly right now.

Others say they need to be prepared when the economy does pick up.

Commissioners plan to discuss the idea during a retreat at the end of the month.
