After 50 years Lowndes Co. Superior Court Clerk retires

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

After 50 years of service in Lowndes County, the Superior Court Clerk is retiring.

Sara Crow has seen a lot of changes at the courthouse and in the court system since the 1960's.

Born and raised in Lowndes County, Sara Crow says she never imagined she'd work in the same office for more than a half century.

"My father would go into the courtroom to listen to the case being tried, and we had to sit in the balcony because children and females we not allowed," said Crow.

In 1961 Crow started working in the clerk's office. In 1983 she was elected Superior Court Clerk and she's held the position up until now.

"Had no idea when I started to work in September of 1961 that I would have spent my life as a public servant," said Crow.

And the people she worked with over the years say she's been an inspiration. Former Superior Court Judge Arthur McLean says he and Crow go back 50 years.

"Everywhere I have gone in the state one of the first questions that is asked of me is, do I know Sara Crow? And they invariably speak very highly of her and appreciate all that she's done for the courts in general and really for the people in the state of Georgia," said McLean.

Crow says she's seen all of the transformations of the historic courthouse including the building of the annex where her office used to be, to now it being torn down.

She says one of the most frightening moments of her career took place during a murder trial inside this courthouse.

"We had a defendant that tried to escape during his jury trial in the court room. Chief Deputy Sheriff at that time was Billy Cowart an he handled that situation very well but I went under the desk," said Crow.

Crow says she plans to spend her retirement vacationing with her husband

Lowndes County officials will hold a reception for Crow inside the Judicial Complex Friday at 4 p.m.
