District 11 candidates prepare for runoff

DECATUR CO., GA (WALB) -

Supporters, volunteers, and the candidates themselves are out reminding folks to get out and vote.

"It's always important to vote. This is our freedom that we have as Americans and people have fought and died for this freedom. So I think it's a tremendous opportunity. I will never miss the opportunity to vote," said State Senate Candidate Mike Keown.

"I'm spending this last day reaching out to my supporters, encouraging them to go out and exercise their right to vote that so many people have fought and died for," said State Senate Candidate Dr. Dean Burke.

Longtime Senator John Bulloch's health related resignation opened the door for an expedited Special Election in District 11 on January 8th.

As the top two vote getters, city councilman and OBGYN Dean Burke and minister and former congressional nominee Mike Keown earned their spots in Tuesday's runoff.

Both Keown and Burke had to hold off four other candidates in the January election to make it to this point.

The candidates had the opportunity to address the voters last week with debates in Cairo and Thomasville.

"I think it has helped us a lot because when people see the two opponents side by side than I think they can make a better judgement for who they want to vote for," said Keown.

"After those events were over I had a lot of people come up to me and tell me thank you and they appreciated where I was coming from," said Burke.

The winner of Tuesday's runoff will be sworn in almost immediately, as the state legislature is already in session.

The polls will be open from 7 to 7 Tuesday in Seminole, Decatur, Miller, Colquitt, Mitchell, Early, Grady, and Thomas Counties.
