ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
M&M Mars and Albany women's Junior League teamed up with second harvest of south Georgia to build boxes to feed the community. The unity displayed today sends a powerful message of what can be accomplished in the community when we all work towards a common goal.
As the weather drops more people are inclined to stay inside where it's warm but on Saturday some volunteers braved the weather for a worthy cause. "It's a little chilly but it's good because we're out here for a purpose," said Junior League member Jenny Collins.
With that purpose in mind and a goal of building 600 boxes in only 3 hours the volunteers bundled up and got down to business. "To know that were contributing to help the people in our community it's just warm," said Collins.
Second Harvest of South Georgia holds events like this often, but branch director Jim case says this is a unique situation. "We have corporate and civic coming together for one cause and that's feeding the hungry," said Second Harvest branch director Jim Case.
Building 600 boxes means feeding 200 families, time many don't mind spending to make sure that they're doing their part to make sure people have food to eat. "Were able to do our part to feed families especially during these cold winter months,"said Collins.
The volunteers also wanted to make sure that the recipients of the boxes had a variety of things to choose from. "The wonderful thing about those boxes is they're packed with nutritional foods that are easy to use and the family can have a choice," said Case.
All of the boxes made on Saturday will be given out in Albany through The Lord's Pantry. The boxes made today will only last them a month since the pantry cleans out so quickly. "Having the boxes ready for them, they're going to immediately go out this month they're not going to sit here and wait to be given out," said Case.
The fight to end hunger in Southwest Georgia and beyond is a battle that won't be won today but with members of the community actively taking initiative to step up the possibilities are endless.
