ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

According to the meerkats at Chehaw we should be seeing an early spring this year!

Today is ground hogs day and to keep the age old tradition going, Chehaw brought out the meerkats. A crowd circled the exhibit and waited for the animals to be released from their vault. Asante, the meerkat led the pack as his other 3 brothers roamed the area.

Spectators rewarded the meerkats for their service by tossing in grasshoppers for them to eat.

"He is going to run up to the top of the mound and he is either going to see his shadow and run back into his vault hole or he's going to stand guard which means we have some spring headed our way," says Jackie Entz, Chehaw Education Coordinator.

Last year Asante predicted that we would see an early Spring and he was right. If he's correct again this year that would make him 2 for 2 in his predictions.
