Public hearings to be held on school closings

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Two east Albany politicians want to make sure you know about the public hearings next week concerning the possible school closings.

School Board member Farrell Ealum and city commissioner Jon Howard say this process is moving fast... and if you want your voice heard... you need to be at Monday's meeting.

They represent the districts in east Dougherty County.

Two of the schools that could close are in that area.

"I think when you start to close down a community school there is a lot of research showing you'll have a further decaying of the community," said Darrel Ealum, school board member.

"We agree some schools need to be closed," said City Commissioner Jon Howard. "As a concerned citizen, an elected official we know the population has shifted from south Georgia to north Georgia, but I think we need to look at a comprehensive plan to say what would be better in the next five to 10 years of the whole school system."

The first public hearing is Monday night at five at the school administration building.
