SWGTC announces GOAL winner

THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) -

Another south Georgia GOAL winner was announced Friday to represent her college at next month's regional competition.

Southwest Georgia Technical College's Marilyn Manning received her honor at Friday's Thomasville Kiwanis Club meeting.

While all of the four finalists were deserving of the award, only one can represent their school, first in Tifton then in Atlanta.

"I nominated Marilyn because she is a senior in our associate of science degree program and she's not only outstanding in her classroom performance, but also in her clinical performance with the patients," said ASN Program Director Tammy Bryant.

Soon to be nurse Marilyn Manning was announced Friday as the 2013 Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership winner for Southwest Georgia Technical College.

"I want to represent this college to the best of my ability. Technical education is a very important option for people in life right now and it makes us prepared for the workforce and it needs to represented. The image needs to be projected and I'm just honored," said Manning.

Manning was nominated by her program director Tammy Bryant.

"You can see the love in her heart for this profession and that's what we need in representing the technical college system of Georgia. It's people that love why they've chosen their career," said Bryant.

But of course nobody was prouder than her mother Janie.

"Marilyn was born wanting to be a healer. She has been a massage therapist and wanted to go deeper into her studies so she decided to be a nurse. And I think she picked the perfect place and I know she is going to be a great healer."

Manning's next challenge will be competing at regionals in Tifton on February 28th. We asked her how she will prepare for the next round. "A lot of prayer. I'm in my last semester of nursing school, so yea it's a lot of prayer."

Manning does receive an Ipad for being the school winner, but if she goes on to win the state title, she'll be awarded a new car.

The state GOAL winner will serve as the statewide representative and ambassador of technical education in Georgia for 2013.
