Four suspected armed robbers are in jail after a Tift County hold up. The crime is the latest in a string of violent armed robberies in the area. Right now investigators are trying to figure out if the men they have in custody are connected to those other crimes.

The robbery crew hit J and M Food mart on Tuesday night.  The crime was very similar to other robberies at Tift County convenience stores except this time, the robbers didn't get away. It was an experience the store clerk had never been through and hopes never to go through again.

Two robbers one of them carrying a large handgun stormed inside J&M Food mart on Highway 82 and demanded money. "Anytime you put a gun into play, it's dangerous," said Tift County Sheriff Gene Scarborough.  

According to, Scarborough the robbery played out like a robbery that was pulled off two weeks ago at Dixie Food Citgo. Three men robbed that store and one of them fired a shot at a passing car. In the latest hold up, the suspects took off running but were caught a short time later on Tifton El Dorado Road with some incriminating evidence.

"I think they got some clothing and cigarettes. I believe they recovered all the money," said Sheriff Scarborough.  18-year-old Tavarus Brown, 19-year-old Raheem Bryant, 20-year-old Ambritt Milton and 17-year-old Howard Wright, Jr. were all charged in the robbery.  Firearms and other evidence that could link them to other crimes were also found in their possession.

"They found some material or items that may have been used in some of the other robberies. So they may be able to tie those together," said Scarborough. He hopes the arrests will put an end to some of the robberies and he is thankful that no one was harmed.

Scarborough says he is carrying out an initiative he pledged to complete when he was running for office that includes working with community and faith based groups in an effort to work with the youth in Tift County to steer them away from a life of violent crime. All four suspects are being held in the Tift County jail charged with armed robbery.
