Downed power line pose threats after storms

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Live power wires are just one danger you and first responders may face when bad weather hits.

Those first responders encourage you to be safe and think smart when severe weather threatens your area.

They remind you to take cover in the lowest point in your home away from windows and doors.

After the storm, watch for those potentially deadly downed power lines.

"Anytime a power line is on the ground, you want to assume that it is live and energized and you never want to touch it. What we do is get out, assess the situation, call Water, Gas and Light and de-energize it. That's the safest thing for us to do," said Albany Fire Department Battalion Chief Kelly Harcrow.

Officials recommend you have an emergency kit and a plan, so your family is ready if a disaster happens.
