Tree falls on Americus home, crushes car

AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -

An Americus family is staying in a hotel after strong winds knocked over a tree in their front yard, Wednesday night.

It hit their house and crushed their car.

Even so, the homeowner says it could have been a lot worse.

Carol Hartage describes the horrific noise she heard right before this tree snapped and came crashing down on her car and Columbia Avenue home.

"The winds were howling and everything and we just heard a swishing noise and we looked out and the tree was down on the car and house," said Hartage.

She is grateful because the damage could have been worse.

Hartage and her family were home when the tree tumbled over and says it barely missed the living room where her children were at the time.

She fought back tears thinking of what could have been.

"I was just trying to locate my children and make sure they were ok," said Hartage.

Not too far from the house on Highway 49 was another tree that fell, backing up traffic for hours.

One driver described the moment he saw the tree tipping over.

"It just fell. I saw it falling and I just stopped. Then I looked and said dang that's a tree across the road," said Patrick Harris.

No was hurt in either incident.

Hartage says although seeing the damage hurts, she's happy everyone is ok.

"I'm just thanking God that we were all fine. The martial thing can be replaced, but my family is what matters," said Hartage.

The Flint River Chapter of the American Red Cross has put the family in a hotel for the night.

Power crews hope to have all power restored in the Americus area by early in the morning.
