ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

An East Albany convenience store owner is thanking his neighbors and Albany Police  for catching a burglar who tried to break into his store.

Police say the crook was getting ready to smash a hole in the back wall of the Stop And Shop on East Clark Avenue, when officers caught him red-handed.

This is the fourth time in three months crooks have tried to smash holes in the rear of Henry Patel's East Albany stores. But this time good neighbors caught the crook.

Take a look at this man, caught on surveillance video pulling the electrical power switches behind the Stop And Shop on East Clark about 3 Tuesday morning. He walks back under the camera, and gets a sledgehammer, ready to smash a hole in the back wall.

Stop And Shop owner Henry Patel said "Three times already it happened at my other store, Dixie on Broad. And here they try two times here."

But Tuesday morning a neighbor saw the crook, and called 9-1-1. Albany Police were close by, and caught him before he could break the wall. After a short foot chase 26 year old Demarcus Green was loaded into the back of a police car. Patel recognized him as a frequent customer.

Patel said "Yea, I recognized him. Me and all my employees we saw him everyday coming in the store."

Patel said Green had a bag of tools to cut the fence lock, and sledgehammers to break the wall. Other business owners in the neighborhood that have also had holes broken into their buildings tell me they suspect Green burglarized them as well.

Patel said "Might be, because he got all the tools with him so he looks like he is a professional for this things."

Patel said he wants to thank his neighbors and the police for stopping this crook.

Patel said "We are a very good neighborhood. We have very nice customers. They always take care of us. This is the best results, for they are doing so much good for me."

The only damage, Patel had to replace the lock to his fence, that was cut.

Patel said usually 3 o-clock in the morning phone calls from the police are bad, but this time it had a happy ending. No damage to his store and the crook in custody.

Green is been charged with criminal intent to commit burglary, possession of tools in the commission of a crime, and loitering and prowling.
