AFD warns public amid Brazil nightclub tragedy

Chief James Carswell Chief James Carswell
ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

City of Albany Fire officials say we have codes in place to prevent tragedies such as the one in southern Brazil and the one seen here ten years ago in Rhode Island.

Chief James Carswell says all businesses are required to have at least two exits, but more may be needed depending on the size of the building.

Those doors shouldn't be locked or blocked.

Chief Carswell says you can play a vital role in making sure businesses follow the codes.

"A lot of it is complaint driven. We may inspect somebody today and not get back to them until 12 months. We really depend on people who frequent these businesses. If they see something that's not suppose to be, call us and we'll make sure to get it corrected," said Chief Carswell.

Carswell says you should also get into the habit of familiarizing yourself with exits of building, especially dark, crowded nightclubs, as soon as you walk in.
