ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
Two South Georgia organizations say their fund raising hunting events over the weekend were big successes.
The first ever A.K.C. Southern Heritage Coon Hunt and Show at the Exchange Club Fairgrounds had much more participation than they predicted. 156 dogs from across the nation came to the hunt. Organizers hoped for 100.
Between 1500 to 2000 visitors came to the fairgrounds to see the dogs and talk with the hunters. Exchange Club and A.K.C. organizers say they were extremely pleased with the event that replaced the much bigger UKC Winter Classic that moved to Batesville, Mississippi this year.
Meanwhile organizers of the 27th annual Quail Unlimited Celebrity Hunt say their weekend event brought out record numbers. They are still totaling up the money raised from their auctions and fund raisers, but organizers say they had record attendance to almost every event.
Quail Unlimited almost went bankrupt three years ago because of the economic downturn. And while President Bill Bowles said they are still paying off that old debt, this year's event will keep the conservation organization alive.
