The murder trial of eight reported Albany gang members starts today in Dougherty Superior Court.

The eight will stand trial at the same time, for the February 2010 beating and shooting death of LaShelton Kennard Stanford at Brick House Productions on Schilling Avenue.

Prosecutors say Shenard Smith was the triggerman who shot Stanford seven times, and that all are members of the East Side Mafia gang, and were involved in his murder.

"All of these individuals were party to the crime, which is a legal standard," said Dougherty District Attorney Greg Edwards.  "And we expect the evidence to show that they either directly or as a party to the crime engaged in the actions that caused the death."

If convicted of murder, the men would face mandatory life in prison sentences. Judge Denise Marshall is presiding.
