THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) -
A Thomasville war hero has died.
Kenley Lanter, a Thomasville native, died in his home Thursday after battling a lengthy illness.
The 88 year-old served during World War 2 in the Navy, on the USS Indianapolis. His ship was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in the Philippine Sea, and sank in just 12 minutes. Of the 1,200 men on board, only 317, including Lanter, survived the shark-infested waters and four days at sea.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2pm.
