Valdosta teenager to sing on The Voice

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

A Valdosta High School student is about make her television debut as a contestant on NBC's hit show The Voice. The 17-year-old singer has just made it through the final round of auditions in Atlanta. Up next, performing before an audience of millions.

Born and raised in Valdosta, Jashuna Richard says she hasn't put down her hairbrush microphone since she was two years old.

"I sing everywhere. I walk down the hallways and sing, I sing at church, I sing in my room, I sing on the phone, I sing in chorus all the time - probably a little bit too much," said Richard.

After three rounds of auditions for NBC's hit show The Voice, Richard made it through to the final round in Atlanta last night. She says it was her chorus teacher that really pushed her to audition.

"She's always been there for me. Like if I need help with a song she was there. She would be like you have to do this, do that. And she was tough at times but look where it got me," said Richard.

Her chorus teacher, Ashley Cooper said she's so proud. "From the student who walked in my room last year to just the student that she's become this year, and the young woman she's becoming, and finding her talent and using her talent."

Richard's godfather says he knew she'd be signing for the rest of her life.

"She said she wanted to be on this TV show The Voice, and I said go ahead and give it a try too. I mean you know God gave you this talent, use it," said David Griffith.

Richard says regardless of how far she gets in the show, she's just happy to experience it all.

"Even if I just stop right here, that's a blessing for me because there's a lot of people who haven't even gone this far."

Richard says one of her biggest musical influences is Toni Braxton. She says she loves singing all genres but R&B is her favorite.
