Quail Unlimited celebrity hunters take to the fields

Film Actor and producer Beau Turpin hunts for the first time in the Quail Unlimited Celebrity Hunt. A native of Albany, Turpin said it's a genuine thrill.

Turpin said "Growing up here and being able to come back and be a part of this, with so many people from my hometown and with people from all over the country."

Friday at Wynfield Plantation, joining Turpin were hunters from Nebraska, New York, South Dakota, and North Carolina all taking part. For 27 years Quail Unlimited through the celebrity hunt has spread the word about the quality of South Georgia quail hunting.

Wynfield Plantation General Manager Mike Osteen said "With the long leaf pine and the wiregrass, that's pretty traditional. When you look actually from Albany to Thomasville you are looking at what they would consider the quail belt."

And each year thousands of people come to South Georgia to hunt on the plantations. That generates an impact on the economy of nearly one billion dollars, and employs thousands of people.

Wynfield Plantation Owner Partner Lane Kjellsen said "It's incredible. It takes a lot to run a hunting operation and keep a plantation up to speed. The economy her is absolutely dependent upon quail hunting to keep the plantations going."

The money raised by the celebrity hunt, QU's biggest fund raiser, helps pay for research and education to preserve the natural habitat for quail and other wild birds. That's why Artist David Lanier has been a long time supporter.

Lanier said "Quail Unlimited is just such a good organization to promote quail and conservation. We're just glad to have them in our hometown, and eager to support them."

And all the visiting hunters attending this weekend will return home and spread the word about South Georgia quail hunting, one of the most effective marketing efforts for the sport.
