Arrest made in Tift County murder

TIFT CO., GA (WALB) -

A fight between friends turned deadly last night in Tift County.

A 35-year-old man was shot in the head at point blank range after neighbors say an argument quickly grew out of control. Tonight the shooter is in jail charged in what many are calling a senseless murder.

Neighbors say Murphy and Cedric Sears were sitting near the street drinking when they got into an argument. Police tell us Sears pulled a gun and shot Murphy in the head.

"When I got here there was a whole bunch of people around, and there was a body laying right here of a young man," says Darryl Redding, Holy Temple Church of Trinity Pastor.

That man was 35 year old Cambre Vashown Murphy. When deputies arrived, they found his body in the street with a gunshot to the head.

"He was stretched out right here, by the time I got here they had a sheet over him, and he was covered," says Redding.

Officials say the shooter is 37 year old Cedric Lervell Sears. Sears was upset when officers arrived.

"It was said that they were sitting together in front of a trailer, and drinking, so alcohol may have been a contributing factor," says Tift County Sheriff Gene Scarbrough.

Neighbors say the two were friends and had gotten into an argument before the shooting.

"Some of the people around the neighborhood, that live there, had overheard them shouting," says Scarbrough.

Sears was arrested and charged with murder. Murphy was pronounced dead at the scene.

"It happened there in the street because where fell was where he was when they found him, blood under his head on the street," says Scarbrough.

Now neighbors say it's time for people to start speaking up about things that go on in the community.

"We often see this, we see this everywhere we go, all over the country, young black men laying in the road, dead, killed by our own people, for what, really for noting," says Redding.

For now, Redding will continue to pray for those who lost a loved one too soon.

Sears is in the Tift County Jail without bond. Deputies went back to the scene today to gather more information and talk with neighbors.
