ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The longtime leader of the Albany Water Gas and Light Commission is leaving the utility. After nearly 20 years General Manager Lem Edwards is retiring.

On Thursday WG&L board members talked about his dedication and the compassion he shows to employees. While they organize a search for his replacement they hope city manager James Taylor will serve as interim General Manager.

"I suggest that maybe we should use a interim General Manager that wasn't a part of the organization already which would also clear up or allow current employees to apply and feel like each has been given the same opportunity," said Albany Mayor Dorothy Hubbard.

The city commission must approve Taylor for the interim job. Once the interim spot is filled, they will tackle how to pursue the search process.
