New food truck finds a home downtown

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Garcia's Mexican Food opened up their truck to the public Thursday for the first time behind the Flint RiverQuarium.

The truck plans to open every week day for lunch, and people who work downtown hope this is just one more stepping stone in improving the downtown area.

For the lunch time crowds, Mexican food always seems to be a top choice but homemade tacos and burritos within walking distance from the office, that sounds even better.

And they serve, "Tacos, quesadilla, and burritos everything like that so we try to bring different items everyday to everybody to keep them happy." Jose Garcia owned the Mexican restaurant, Pica De Gallo, in East Albany before they closed when times got tough.

"Last year we closed. With you know the USA the economy came really low so in that situation, we closed," said Garcia.

But Garcia and his tasty tacos are getting a second chance. Garcia's Mexican Food is now at your service from the convenience of a food truck that sits right behind the RiverQuarium.

Vicki Churchman who works at RiverQuarium is happy. "They needed a place where they can set up where they don't have to worry about traffic, but they are also visible from Pine Avenue."

Officials with the RiverQuarium say they welcomed the truck with open arms, and free parking after downtown manager Aaron Blair asked them to host the truck in their parking lot. "Our staff was really excited to hear that they would have an option for lunch that was right here, and we wanted to see the community come down and have lunch and enjoy themselves," said Churchman. 

And hungry customers say they hope the truck will attract even more people downtown.  "I think this is a great way to bring people in Albany to downtown and the RiverQuarium is right there so make a day out of it," said Mandy Lanier.

And Garcia says everyone can grab a quick taco during their lunch time break-- an opportunity that many people who work downtown can now enjoy. Garcia says he's going to start serving lunch between 10AM and 2PM on Thursdays and Fridays, but expects to expand to five days a week as news spreads.

The truck only takes cash, so make sure to bring $5.00 so you can get three tacos and a drink.
