ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Albany-Dougherty Coalition to End Homelessness kicked off what's expected to be a successful week of service on Thursday morning.

Mayor Dorothy Hubbard signed and read a proclamation designating the beginning of the 10 Year Plan to End Homelessness.

Starting next Monday, the coalition will feed the homeless at River Road Church, Greater Second Mount Olive, and the Salvation Army.

There, people will be asked to fill out an anonymous survey to better count of numbers of homeless people in our area.

"We've identified 800 children in the Dougherty county school system that meet the definition so we figure somewhere between 2,000 and 3,000 people in our local community now today that meet that definition of homeless," said Albany Dougherty Homeless Coalition Member David Blackwell.

The coalition says one of their biggest goals is to increase the number of emergency and temporary housing in Albany and Dougherty County.
