ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
The Albany Fire Department will soon get more than a dozen of the latest thermal imaging camera systems to help them save lives. Currently, the department only has one working thermal imaging camera.
On Tuesday, city commissioners approved buying 14 new cameras that will help firefighters navigate through smoke and fire to find people who may be trapped. The cameras will also help protect firefighters.
"You can actually see an outline of somebody. You can see an opening in the floor that may have opened up during the fire that you did not know was there, to prevent you from stepping into it," said Albany Fire Chief James Carswell.
The 14 thermal imaging cameras will cost almost $115,000. Each Albany Fire Department truck should be equipped with one next month.
