THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) -

Investigators in Thomasville are trying to determine what led a man to shoot at his estranged wife before shooting himself.

Police say around 7 a.m. Wednesday morning 40-year old Leonard Threadcraft chased his wife, 42-year old Loretha Threadcraft, from Tender Loving Care Daycare Center she owns into a dialysis clinic across the street.

He followed her into the Southwest Georgia Dialysis Clinic where police say she locked herself in a bathroom.

"He then fired two shots in the area of the restroom door. Did not hit anyone. At that time he exited the building where he fatally shot himself," said Lt. Eric Hampton.

Investigators say the Threadcrafts were technically still married, but they were in the process of getting divorced.

"From what we understand there was a domestic situation between the two and she was trying to flee away from him.," said Hampton.

Dante Johnson lives close to the daycare center and clinic and was friendly with the Threadcrafts.

"I knew Threadcraft through ministry. We did ministry together in the church. Close friends. I knew his mother very well. She was very supportive and helpful to me through ministry."

Johnson says this morning's incident put things in perspective.

"It's a wake up call. Just a wake up call how close it is to our own house. Just hoping the family will be able to make it and be encouraged."

The gun was recovered at the scene, but police have not released what kind of gun it was or where on his body Threadcraft shot himself.

This was the Threadcrafts second marriage to each other.

They got divorced in January 2003, but later remarried.
