ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

We haven't had much cold weather this winter, but temperatures are plummeting Tuesday night and fire officials urge you to stay safe while trying to keep warm.

They say you need to take extra precautions so you don't injure yourself or damage your home.

They say you should never use a stove to heat your house.

Don't bring outdoor heating instruments inside and be careful with space heaters.

"We urge them not to use extension cords if they can help it with space heaters and keep them at least 3 to 5 feet away from any combustibles. Don't put them to close to blankets or the bed because that can cause them to catch on fire," said Lt. Ricky Thompson with the Albany Fire Department.

Officials also say make sure you blow out candles before going to bed and regularly check smoke detectors to make sure they're working properly.
