CAIRO, GA (WALB) -
A south Georgia county is looking for contractors to construct a dam for a lake project which has been in the works for more than 80 years.
Grady County commissioners are now pre-qualifying interesting bidders for the Tired Creek Lake project.
When completed, the 960-acre lake is expected to provide fishing, camping, and other outdoor activities.
If you live in Grady County, you've probably heard of the Tired Creek Lake project.
"I heard they were considering doing something like that down at Tired Creek and it would be nice if the project went through because at least people will have somewhere to go," said Grady County Resident Juanita Hernandez.
The project was proposed in the 1930's but didn't happen. It stalled again in the 70's because of financial and permit restrictions.
Now the county is pre-qualifying contractors for a 42 foot high, half mile wide dam that will create the 960 acre lake.
"I think it would be wonderful, especially for my grandkids. They don't have anywhere to run around or walk. I think it would be nice," said Hernandez.
While many folks in Grady County do support the lake project, others are against it.
One Grady County resident who did not want to speak on camera says he thinks the lake would be a waste of money because it wouldn't attract that many visitors.
22-year old Robert Thomas disagrees.
"I think it would be good to give us something to do because mostly what you see is what you get. I mean we have Barber Park, but other than that we have nothing to do to keep ourselves out of trouble."
Some of the credentials the county says they are looking for in a contractor are experience building at least three big dams in the last 10 years and having worked in the Southeast United States.
The county is anticipating a 60-day period to advertise for and receive bids prior to a bid opening.
