Douglas - The GBI Crime lab has determined that a body recovered from a house fire in Coffee County died as result of a homicide.

An autopsy was performed on this date at the GBI Crime Lab in Macon, Georgia. The cause of death is not being released at this time.

On Friday, January 18, 2013, at approximately 6:36 pm, Coffee County 911 received a call in reference to a house fire on Bowens Mill Road near Broxton, Georgia. The fire resulted in extensive damage to the 2-story residence. Initial Investigation revealed that one of the people who resided at the house had not been located.

The Coffee County Sheriff's Office requested assistance from the Douglas GBI Office as well as the State Fire Marshall's Office. The scene was processed thru out the day Saturday and the charred remains of a human body were discovered in the fire debris later that night.

The victim was identified by the GBI Crime Lab utilizing dental records as Edith Carole Sheffield, W/F, 49 years old. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

No arrest has been made and investigative leads are being followed.

The investigation is still on-going; therefore no other details will be released at this time.
