MOULTRIE, GA (WALB) -
Tabitha Brown says she's seen a lot of crazy things during the 5 years she's worked at Enmark Convenience Store right off First Avenue in Moultrie but Wednesday afternoon, even she was shocked by what happened.
"I was working and he came up here with the checks," says Brown.
Brown says 52-year-old John Stanley Griner walked up to the window asking for two cartons of Newport cigarettes and then handed her a check. She knew right then the check wasn't his.
"She had called me and said the he had been writing checks. He had already written two or three here," says Brown.
Earlier in the day Brown received a phone call from a woman who said her father's checks had been stolen.
"She said the checks were stolen so I asked him for his I. D., he said he didn't have one."
That's when Griner realized his plan had been discovered and ran but it wasn't long before Brown caught up with him and led police to him.
"There was another cashier that was coming in so she was coming in and I was getting ready to get off and so I ran down there and jumped in my car," says Brown.
Brown followed Griner to the Harvey's Supermarket down the street where he again tried to use one of the forged checks. But by then, police had discovered him at the scene of the crime.
"I was running down there and the police called me on the phone and I described what vehicle they were in and it was him and two more guys," Brown says.
Griner was arrested and charged with two counts of forgery and obstruction of an officer.
As for Brown, she says she's glad she could do her part to get one more suspected criminal off the streets.
Police say after a quick foot chase that started at Harvey's, Griner was found hiding in a wooded area behind American Pawn. He remains in the Colquitt County jail as of Friday night.
Griner was also wanted in Dougherty County on a probation violation warrant.
