Honor MLK, Jr. with a Day of Service

Many folks have Monday off from work for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, but service organizations hope you'll use that holiday to lend a helping hand.

Volunteers in Thomasville will serve the community by addressing issues including hunger, community development, and education.

Black History Museum Curator Jack Hadley says if not for people such as Abraham Lincoln, the Tuskegee Airmen, and Jackie Robinson, there would not be a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

"Dr. King came along and put the icing on the cake. Dr. King, because these were pioneers before him, but Dr. King came along and showed America we are more than what we have been in the past."

Along with hundreds of thousands of others across the country, Hands on Thomas County volunteers will be participating in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

"We will be doing a Manna Drop which is a food distribution which moves to different locations in the community. And we'll have volunteers go to Second Harvest to help them sort and stock shelves," said Hands On Thomas County Program Director Joseph Newborn.

"Whether it's cleaning up a building, whether they are sweeping the streets, painting, construction work, they understand that if Dr. King was alive today he would be doing the same thing. Building America," said Hadley.

Anyone who volunteers in Thomas County Monday morning, is invited that afternoon to tour the Jack Hadley Black History Museum.

"I'm hoping that they will come and it's free to them also. We're not charging them anything. All they have to do is come in and say they are with Hands On Thomas County, I worked there this morning. You will be welcome to the whole museum to see the legacy of not only Dr. King, but other black achievers and unsung heroes," said Hadley.

Staff and youth from the Thomas County Boys and Girls Club will also be participating Monday with a community beautification project.

The service projects will start Monday morning at 10 and run until 1 p.m.
