AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -

Dr. Martin Luther King left a legacy that has impacted all Americans and that legacy was celebrated Wednesday in Americus.

Georgia Southwestern State University held a convocation in honor of Dr. King featuring speakers, singers and dancers.

WALB News 10's Karla Heath-Sands was the keynote speaker.

She talked about King's "I Have A Dream" speech and asked students whether they are dream makers.

Those students say King's message is still relevant nearly 45 years after he was killed.

"Although we are young, he opened a lot of doors, for minorities, for women and even for Americans and people in general.  And so, one lesson that we can learn is capitalizing on those opportunities that are presented before us," said Tony Miller, the President of Georgia Southwestern Student Government.

Miller says the best way for young people to keep Dr. King's dream alive is through education and keeping away from possible bad influences.
