ACREE, GA (WALB) -
Albany Firefighters continue to investigate a fire that destroyed an historic home in Acree early this morning.
About 3:00AM, firefighters were called to the 4400 block of Acree Avenue just off South County Line Road.
Witnesses say the house was already engulfed in flames.
Homeowner Skip Nichols says the house was vacant and had no electrical service but had some historical significance to the community.
Battalion Chief Keith Ambrose said the house was abandoned, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
"It was an old house that was in the community of Acree since the early 1900's. Actually the doctor that delivered my mother lived in that house back when she was born," said Nichols.
Nichols said just yesterday he boarded up windows at the home again because it appeared vagrants had broken in and were living inside.
