ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
City leaders aren't ready to hand over money to Water, Gas and Light to pay for the costly clean up of an old manufactured gas plant.
Tuesday, city commissioners approved an amended budget for 2013. But they did not approve giving WG&L $375,000 for the clean up.
The state ordered Water, Gas and Light to start digging up the site by March. The project could cost up to $10 million. $750,000 is needed to get started. WG&L wants the city to split the cost evenly.
"I kind of favored the idea of splitting it, because we don't want to say we're saving you tax dollars on property tax on one hand, but then we're raising your rates on the other," said Commissioner Roger Marietta. He says the money is essentially coming from the same pot.
Tuesday, the commission gave the city manager more time to come up with a solution of how to pay for the project.
