Viewpoint: MLK Day- and public service

Local communities, states, and the nation are preparing to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. this weekend, as well as on Monday, the national holiday.

Our nation has been observing the King Holiday for thirty years now and in recent years, that day has become a day that also represents  service!

We can all serve others by volunteering our time and energies to make communities better places to call home for ourselves… and for others.   That service can be on a small or larger scale.  Just serve!

This year, the King Center in Atlanta has challenged people of "all nations to begin a new era of nonviolent conflict and reconciliation, bringing people together across racial, religious, political and cultural divisions."

That goal keeps with Dr. King's vision of the essential unity of all people.

As we honor Dr. King's birthday and also observe the 50th anniversary of his "I Have a Dream" speech this year, we are all challenged to continue the Dream and serve others!!
