Shocking End to high speed Chase

30-year-old Kentavian Lewis 30-year-old Kentavian Lewis
ASHBURN, GA (WALB) -

A two-county high speed chase left even law enforcers in shock. The chase started on Interstate 75 in Crisp County and went into Turner County, but deputies did not expect to find what they did in the back seat of the suspect's car.

It seems to be a weekly occurrence here in South Georgia-- someone trying to outrun the cops. It's not that uncommon for chases to unfold on the Interstate as this one did, but what deputies didn't realize was this suspect was willing to run with child lying in the back seat.

Crisp County Deputy Chase McNees was trying to stop a Pontiac Bonneville on I-75 the morning on January 9th for a window tint violation. "We had no idea who was in the vehicle. Most of the time when they refuse that have a reason," said Crisp County Sheriff's Capt. Brian Hobbs.

In the case 30-year-old Kentavian Lewis is driving on a suspended license, but he's about to rack up more charges as he reaches speed of 100 miles per hour as he races into Turner County.

"We notify Turner County that we're coming into their county and we're requesting assistance," Hobbs said.

Turner County Deputies take over the chase as the Bonneville swerves through the city streets of Ashburn. Several minutes into the chase, the suspect turns onto a dirt road leading to Orchard Hill Trailer Park.

With no road ahead, Lewis takes off running. They surround the car and demand his girlfriend to get out the passenger seat Here's the shocking part.

"The deputy opens the back door of the car and there is a 3-year-old child laying in the back seat."

Captain Brian Hobbs said had officers known a child was in the car, they would have called off the chase.

Now Lewis is facing 14 charges including child safety violations, reckless driving, and fleeing police. A habitual violator who risked the life of his child in a failed attempt to outrun the law.
