BAKER CO., GA (WALB) -

It's been nearly 45 years since the death of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., but his legacy still lives on here in southwest Georgia.

People in Baker County celebrated the observance of his 84th birthday Sunday night at the old East Baker High school. State House Representative Winfred Dukes gave a memorial speech and Reverend Jimmie Fair re-enacted King's "I Have A Dream" speech. The East Baker Historical Society hosted Sunday night's remembrance.

"I remember there were a lot of times when my parents would share with me as a child the great changes that my generation has benefited from the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King," says Rev. Fair.

"I can remember as a child people in our community African Americans didn't even have the right to vote but now we have had the opportunity to have a seat at the table, to have the opportunity to make public policy," says Dukes.

Lyndon Johnson pushed the Voting Rights Act through in 1964 which finally gave African Americans the right to vote.
