Bryan Shuler, 55, of Moultrie, died Friday, January 11, 2013 at his home.
A service of celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, January 14, 2013 at Moultrie First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mark Addington officiating.
Born May 5, 1957, in Charleston, S.C., he is the son of Marjorie and Connor Bernell Shuler. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Urban Studies from the College of Charleston and a Master's degree in City and Regional Planning from Clemson University. Mr. Shuler's long and successful career in public service and local government included positions of Director of Planning and Development in Clemson, S.C.; Director of Planning in North Augusta, S.C. and New Castle, Delaware; Gainesville-Hall County Director of Development Services; Assistant City Manager of Gainesville, Ga.; and City Manager for the City of Gainesville, Ga. Since 2008, Mr. Shuler has served as County Administrator of Colquitt County. He employed his extensive professional knowledge and skills to provide excellent leadership and management to the County Commission and his community.
Mr. Shuler was a well-respected professional and great friend to many. He was very involved in the Georgia City/County Management Association and received the GCCMA Pillars of Excellence Award in October, 2012. He was a leader in the Association County Commissioners of Georgia and the Georgia Municipal Association. He was described as "a respected voice in the state capital, working to support good and favorable legislation and prevent harmful legislation. He always had the respect of his professional colleagues and peers, and with his thoughtful and calm demeanor, he was an effective spokesperson and advocate." Mr. Shuler was a recipient of the Georgia Municipal Association's Trendsetter Award.
He was a member and faithful servant leader of Moultrie First United Methodist Church. He was a member of Kiwanis, and served as Chairman of the Scholarship Committee. He also served on the board for United Way, Healthy Colquitt County Collation, Moultrie-Colquitt County Economic Development Authority, Moultrie-Colquitt County Chamber of Commerce, Southwest Georgia Regional Commission, and the Southwest Georgia Regional City/County Managers Association.
Mr. Shuler's genuine warmth, gentle spirit, and keen wit were trademarks that endeared him to his colleagues and friends. He was devoted to his community and its people and leaves a legacy of selfless and outstanding service and contributions.
Survivors include his parents; his wife of 30 years, Terry; his son, Kevin Shuler of Denver, Co.; his daughter, Allison Shuler of Athens, Ga.; his sister, Susan Studebaker Mitchum, and his niece, Shelby Studebaker, both of Charleston, S.C.
Memorials may be made to Moultrie First United Methodist Church or Colquitt Regional Medical Foundation- Hospice.
