ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
The first signature arch on the historic Broad Avenue bridge in downtown Albany came down Friday.
Demolition crews knocked down the arch on the east side of the Flint River Friday afternoon.
They hope to have the rest of the bridge down and cleaned up in the next month or so.
The DOT shut down the bridge nearly 4-years ago, and demolition began in November.
A lot of folks say they won't forget the landmark.
"That's the only bridge I really know but it's got to go. The olds got to go to bring the new. My only regrets is that I didn't take the time to take some pictures so I can look at the pictures and tell people hey I remember when they tore that bridge down," says Albany resident William Ross.
"I'm sure a lot of people are use to it. They are use to riding it. I'm use to it so it's kind of strange riding by and you can't go that way anymore. I know we're waiting to ride it again drive through it again," says Albany resident Shakia Morman.
A Florida company won an &11.8 million contract to tear down the bridge and build a new one.
